Due to the sheer size of many timber sheets and the cost associated with shipping them, we don’t currently sell timber sheets through our website. Instead, we’d ask that you get in touch and talk through your requirements with one of our experts. They’ll give you a quote there and then and give you the option of collecting from our factory or having the sheets delivered direct to your door.

What is sheet timber?

Whilst there are many different types of sheet timber, timber sheets (or sheet wood) are made by bonding layers or fragments of timber together using industrial adhesives.

Highly versatile and offering exceptional value for money, these sheets can be used for a huge variety of applications, from cabinet and furniture making, to shelving, roofing, soundproofing, and all manner of other construction, engineering, and DIY purposes.

What types of timber sheets can you supply?

Cut to size in our Liverpool factory to your precise dimensions, we can supply the following types of wood sheets to both trade and public…

Veneered MDF and plywood

Veneered MDF and plywood sheets are created by applying an (approx.) 1mm layer of real wood to either either MDF or plywood sheets of varying thicknesses.

Veneered MDF has veneer applied to both sides – the first side is extremely good quality whilst the other side is of a slightly reduced quality (known as A/B face). Other gradings are available upon request, however.

Veneered MDF is available in the following sizes…

• Oak and Black Walnut
  • 8x4s in 6mm, 9mm, 13mm, 16mm, 19mm and 26mm thicknesses
  • 10x4s in 19mm thickness
• All other veneers are available as 8×4 and 10x4s in 19mm thickness only

Veneered plywood is only veneered to one side, and is available in the following sizes…

• 8x4s in 4mm, 6mm, 9mm, and 12mm thicknesses

Here at Mersey MDF, Plas & Ply, we stock oak, black walnut, maple, ash, sapele, cherry, white beech, and steamed beech veneers.

It’s important to note that this is a natural product and so will have many colour and grain variations. It’s sold unfinished and you’ll need to apply, a stain, varnish or oil to protect and complete your project.

MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard)

An incredibly versatile material, MDF is often used to make furniture as well as for a huge variety of other DIY and building applications. It can sanded, sprayed, and painted, and is available in a variety of types, sizes and thicknesses…

• Regular MDF – Available in 8×4 and 10×4 sheets in various thicknesses started at 2mm and going right up to 50mm
• MR MDF – A moisture resistant type of MDF that’s available in the same sizes and thicknesses as regular MDF
• FR MDF – Fire resistant MDF that comes in 8×4 sheets in 12mm and 18mm thicknesses
• Flexi-MDF – A flexible MDF sheet with grooves cut into it, allowing you to bend the sheet into curves. This is available in long grain – which would bend to make an 8ft long narrow tube – or short grain – which would bend to make a 4ft long wide tube.
• V-grooved MDF – This product has a ‘V’ routed into the face giving it the appearance of a tongue and grooved panel. Available in 9mm & 18mm in both long grain, with the grooves running parallel to the longer dimension of the board (usually 8ft or 10ft) and short grain, where the grooves run parallel to the shorter side, usually 4ft.

Plywood

We stock a number of different types of plywood, including Birch, Far Eastern (sometimes called WBP), Shuttering/Sheathing, Marine and Mesh…

• Far Eastern Ply – So called because that’s exactly where it comes from! This type of plywood is made up of layers laminated together and it is water and boil proof (hence WBP). It’s available in 8×4 and 10×4 sheets in 3.6mm, 5.5mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm, 18mm abd 25mm thicknesses.
• Shuttering / Sheathing Ply – This is mainly used for boarding up windows etc. and is available in 8×4 sheets at 9mm, 12mm and 18mm thicknesses.
• Marine Ply – This type of plywood is completely waterproof, even against sea water. It’s guaranteed to have no core gaps which means that water can’t get in and cause the glue to fail. Quite an expensive option, people ask for marine ply when Far Eastern will actually be sufficient. Always check whether you really do need marine ply before placing an order.
• Mesh Ply – Sometimes called Hex-Ply, mesh plywood is usually used for van or trailer linings. On one face it has a mesh, non-slip coating. We stock 8×4 sheets that are 18mm thick.
• Birch Ply – This is a very high-quality board that’s popular with high end kitchen and bedroom manufacturers. We keep limited stocks of this board and typically will quote and purchase to order.
