How To Hang A Wall Shelf
You will need the following tools and equipment:
- Shelf brackets
- Screws
- A pen or pencil
- A tape measure
- A spirit level
- A drill and drill bit
- A screw drive
- Your shelf
Start by deciding where you want your brackets, these are normally 5 to 10 cm from the edge of the shelf depending the on the size of the shelf.
If you’re putting up a long shelf it is worth considering using more than 2 brackets so that the shelf can support the weight and does not sag in the middle. For a more professional look make sure the distance between each bracket is equal.
Use your pen or pencil to mark the screw holes for each of the brackets then pre drill the holes with the drill ensuring the drill bit is suitable for the size screw you are using and taking care not to drill through the shelf.
Place the bracket over the pre drilled holes and screw into place. Repeat the process for all brackets.
Line the shelf up on the wall in the desired location. At this point its useful to get another person to help with positioning the shelf. Place the spirit level on the shelf and adjust the position of the shelf until level. Now mark the position of the shelf by marking the wall through the screw holes in the bracket.
Depending on the surface you are attaching the shelf to you may need to use rawlplugs to secure the shelf. Now choose an appropriate drill bit and drill holes for the screws in the wall. When the holes are all drilled screw the shelf to the wall.
